Atha bent and picked up a ruby. It was smooth and cold. She looked at the dragon, which was sinking slowly to the ground, it’s leathery sides heaving with it’s sobs. “Maybe,” she said, “you’d better tell me what’s going on here.”
“Ohhh-hoooo-hoooo,” the dragon snuffled a wet snuffle. “I suppose I could, but it’s a long story.”
Time doesn’t mean much to little girls, only to their parents who never feel they have enough of it, and always seem to be wasting what time they have. Atha could think of nothing better than to hear the dragon’s story, no matter how long. She said, “Fire away!”
The dragon, looking startled, said, “If you insist,” and opened it’s mouth. But Atha realized what she had said, and shouted, “NO! I meant, please tell me your story!”
The dragon closed it’s mouth, then it’s eyes. It lowered it’s great head. “My mother’s nest was here. It’s where I was hatched. It was so beautiful then, and I only wished to come back and see my birthplace.. But I found… this.”
Atha was puzzled. In her new and shattered memories, this place was just about the best place imaginable. Despite all the mess and the broken glass, Rose City was beautiful. “What’s wrong with this place?” she asked.
